On the weekend of the 27th and 28th of May, the impressive IE team sponsored by

flew to Paris in order to attend the 16th edition of the MBA Tournament
The MBAT, hosted on the HEC Jouy-en-Josas campus, represents the largest annual gathering of international business school students and unites all involved in three days of athletic competition and camaraderie in sports ranging from swimming to salsa dancing. This year 170 people from the International and Spanish MBA Programs at Instituto de Empresa participated in the event, which witnessed the attendance of 13 schools including IESE, LBS, HEC, Bocconi and INSEAD amongst others. In an event that saw the victory of LBS, Instituto de Empresa ended up fourth in the overall ranking, which is an outstanding result given the number of schools participants and the top quality of the players. This fantastic achievement is especially remarkable considering that IE has a one-year program to draw participants from unlike LBS and IESE that ranked respectively first and second.
Instituto de Empresa achieved the first three places in the following sports:
1st in Babyfoot (Foosball)
2nd in Women Football
2nd in Swimming
3rd Handball
3rd Men Football
We also won the first place in Golf and performed superbly in many other disciplines such as Basketball, Tennis, Sailing, Squash, Rugby, Mountain Biking, Volleyball, Climbing, Table Tennis, Rowing, Badminton, Petanque, Beach Volleyball, Track and Field, Tug of War, Chess, Cross Country, Rollerblading, Salsa Dancing, Cricket and Ultimate Frisbee.
Thanks to all the IE students and partners that went to Paris, participated, cheered and supported. A special recognition for the The MBAT 2006 Committee: Annette, María and Steffi; David, Luca and Kysha. We missed Kysha for the picture.
We hope that everyone will carry with himself the memories of these days and this will further strengthen the sense of belonging to the IE community. We hand the baton to next year’s intake the will surely have the same energy to increase the participant base and come back with a larger number of trophies.
We also want to thank KYOCERA, our sponsor, and the company´s General Manager, Oscar Sánchez (IMBA94), for their support.
Well done and Go IE!!!!

Global Village was a celebration of cultures and diversity where students prepared something typical from their countries. The result was a party where students and IE Staff got together and had a great time. The money raised from the tickets sold, was donated to the West Syndrome Foundation: 1,500 Euros enough for monthly pool physiotherapies for 50 children.
A big thanks to the students of the 18 countries which prepared something: Germany, Mexico, Argentina, Turkey, Norway, England, Switzerland, Brazil, China, India, Costa Rica, Georgia, Chile, Portugal, Greece, Spain, Egypt, USA.
Also a big thanks to the Students office which was more than supportive and gave us a budget for the event, the Partners club, that contributed a lot in the preparation of the stands, the Marketing club that donated cava, the Gourmet club that donated a whole jamón ibérico and wine, Helena from Brazil who sold great bikinis (www.dunasswimwear.com) and donated part of the revenues, Justine from China who gave an artistic touch by selling her pictures and also supported the West Syndrome Foundation with her sales, the two Indian restaurants that donated food - Great initiative from our Indian community (who also sold Indian products and donated profits), our in-kind sponsors: Corona, Old el Paso and Coca-Cola and of course everyone who came and contributed.
On behalf of Net Impact Chapter and the children with West Syndrome a big thanks to all of you!

This year’s theme at the discussion panel was "Managing Growth: Strategies for SMEs and Corporate Ventures", which is one of the hottest topics in the industry nowadays – for both entrepreneurs and multinational companies. The discussion included both models drawn from professional consulting best-practices and real-life cases.

The theme encouraged an active debate between the students and speakers, which was indeed insightful and stimulating.
The workshops session started after a 30 minutes coffee-break that was kindly sponsored by the invited firms, and where students had the opportunity to discuss the lectures on the workshops as well as network with the invited guests.
Luis Ferreira (IMBA 05) and José Manuel Carames, of Mercer Management Consulting, conducted the workshop "How to Launch a Start-up in Telecom Industry".

Enrique Fernández-Campa, Partner at Valoris, lead with Andrés Fontao (IMBA 02), Manager at the same company, the workshop entitled "Key Strategic Decisions for a New Mobile Operator in Spain".

The third workshop was handled by Bernhard Scholten, of Monitor Group, and students were called to discuss issues of "Organic Growth".
![]()
This event was organized by Andrea Ghizzoni, Faisal Al-Kadi, David Millán Planelles, Deepanjan Mukherjee, Andre Naef, Daniel Hanna and Luis Felipe Muñoz Vildoso, all IMBA and MBA 2006 students, with the support and help of the Careers Management Centre. The event was sponsored by participating consulting firms.
Growth is a valuable outcome that follows the implementation of an effective, relative, and unique strategy, and all speakers gave precious insights on how the consulting industry can offer companies to manage this process effectively and efficiently. Today’s clients are becoming more sophisticated and are demanding a real transfer of skills and know-how, instead of the classical one-off engagement. Strategy consulting firms are responding to this need by offering a more sophisticated and integrated solutions. Different strategies in this regard were illustrated by the speakers. And while short term results are always important, the focus is becoming more focused on the long term relationship aimed to provide clients’ shareholders outstanding returns on their investments. Some of topics discussed were: diversification, business process analysis, competitive advantages, organic and buy-out growth strategies, and many others.

The members of the Finance Club have put together the II edition of the Investment Banking Day at Instituto de Empresa. Rodrigo Loureiro Teixeira lead the organization of this event together with Cyril Mazeau, António Rus, Michele Fioretto, Judit Csikasz, Nino Gonjilashvili, Pierluigi Giverso and Andrew de la Mare. Guillaume Delacour from the Careers Management Center, was also a valuable resource in the organization.
This event is the 3rd one organized by the Finance Club in 2006, and will be followed by other interesting ones to be announced.
This year the Finance Club has decided to do minor changes in the event format. In order to develop a closer relationship with the Investment Banking community that was present in last year’s event, these banks were given preference, before new ones were invited. In order to maximize attendance at the workshops, this year only two were held with a very successful audience.
The IBDay was opened by Prof. David Bach, who highlighted his views on the Panel Discussion topic, making a bridge with the concepts that most students had seen in his Country Economic Analysis.
Then two interesting Workshops were held:
"Acquisition process and Acquisition Finance" by Fortis Bank; lectured by Enrique Dermit and Damián Rubianes.
![]()
In this workshop students had the possibility to fully understand how M&A transactions are structured and financed. During approximately 1 hour, Enrique and Damián engaged a very interesting dynamic with the audience, where the presentation was halted by questions and answers.
"Gas Natural and Endesa deal" by UBS, Jaime Vigón.
![]()
Jaime is an Associate Director of the UBS office in Madrid, and has been part of the team that has supported Gas Natural in this process. During the presentation, Jaime build-up the story why it made sense for both companies to merge, and explained in detail the financials that lay behind the deal. Judging from the questions the audience was making, this was clearly a very interesting and updated topic to discuss an International Business School, such as Instituto de Empresa
The discussion panel started after a 30 minutes coffee-break that was kindly sponsored by the invited banks, and where students had the opportunity to discuss the lectures on the workshops as well as network with the invited guests.
Santiago Iñiguez, dean of IE, welcomed the panelists and the moderator, Prof. Arpad von Lazar.
The panel discussion was constituted by:
- Roger Ramos, Fortis
- Ignacio Muñoz-Alonso, Rothschild
- Jorge Vasallo, ABN Amro
- Iñigo Pañeda, Lehman Bothers
- Antonio Álvarez, UBS
The topic for discussion was not an easy one, although it gathered the interest of all the panelists. After a brief and humorous introduction of Prof. Arpad on the current state of the investment banking, each participant gave his own view on the effects that National Protectionism might have in their own business.
The most frequently mentioned cases were the Spanish Endesa / E.ON, Abertis / Autostrate, Pespi / Danone. There was a general consensus that in all cases, the protectionism might be understood up to a certain extent, although the global society will not benefit from such barriers. Regarding the impact that this might have in the Investment Banking business, the participants agreed that these types of deals were still responsible for fee generation, and they were typically long deals, which dissolved any existing idea, that Investment Banks would be severely affected.
The Q&A session was very interesting, with students trying to explore also the political side of the protectionism as well as adding other examples and industries that were facing the same issues.
This was clearly a very successful event, where students had the opportunity to deepen their knowledge on the Corporate Finance world, more specifically Mergers and Acquisitions, and be update with the views and opinions of industry experts, on such a relevant and actual topic.
