The past 19th of May at 17:00hrs Mr. Jorge Zermeño Infante
, Ambassador of Mexico in Spain, honored us with his presence at IE Business School following an invitation from Club IE Mexico.
During the conference, Ambassador Zermeño opened up addressing recent situations and perspectives of the Mexican economy. In his presentation he focused on three main pillars: Economic results, Pending agreements & Perspectives of joint opportunities of international commerce with Spain. He praised Mexico´s low rate of inflation as well as the countries low risk level, further promoting foreign investment. He also discussed Mexico´s Financial status and Public Institutions; supported with
An interesting topic Ambassador Zermeño covered, were the different treaties Mexico was active in. From the TLCAN (NAFTA) with the U.S. and Canada to the EU-Mexico free trade agreement, Mexico has trade negotiations with over 44 countries through 12 different treaties. Mexican Exports have nearly doubled since 2000, with industries such as Petroleum/Petrochemical, Automotive and Aerospatiale growing tremendously in the recent decade. As for Mexico´s direct foreign investment, from the period of 1994-2006 Spain represents 8.7% of the total
foreign investments of our country. Spanish investment in Mexico is mostly related to both Manufacturing and Financial services. For further information, please look into Ambassador Zermeño´s presentation which will be posted in Club IE Mexico´s link.

The Marketing club, with Alex Roemer (IMBA 2009) leading the initiative, invited Vincent Termote, Managing Director at Nespresso Iberia, to share one of the most successful and passionate cases and his exceptional approach to "Nespresso Ultimate Coffee Experience".
While coffee being first and foremost a commodity-coming second after oil-, Nestlé succeeded with Nespresso in all challenges in creating a luxury segment in this mature market. Termote discussed how Luxury is evolving into exclusivity of experience; Nespresso not only delivers a premium product but a promise for emotions that fill the brand uniqueness.
Vision
Although integrated in Nestlé Group, Nespresso has always remained since its foundation in the early 90´s as a stand-alone company; "otherwise, we would have gone lost in the shelves of big super markets and hypermarkets", explained Termote. They were innovative and did not mind to break paradigms when 15 years ago they betted for the internet channel; now 50% of their business is on the net.
Trilogy
At the heart Nespresso system, concept, is a unique trilogy (Triple A) ensuring the customer promise:
The Coffees
All farmers are involved Nespresso's AAA Sustainability Program, further to the company´s commitment to deliver excellent quality coffee while supporting producers and their communities from a social, economic and environmental standpoint. As Termote stated, they pay extra for their production in a win-win relationship, to guarantee welfare and development for them, and their engineers do also help farmers to adopt the best agricultural practices in order to keep guaranteeing the best quality ranges and avoiding producers´ temptation to go to bigger and poorer beans.
Simple, Smart and Stylish machines
Nespresso has invested a very significant amount of resources in technological innovation and design to offer a series of simple to use but highly reliable and stylish machine for customers´ delight either to perfect fit in a kitchen, a living room or an office. They are currently launching Citiz range, focused on an urban style of life.
Service
B2B is still a small but consistent line. Passionate customers at home want Nespresso at the office or at their favorite hotels and restaurants. For catering trade, machines´ easy use and standard results are a guarantee for the client satisfaction. Many of the world best restaurants have already adopted Nespresso , such Arzak in Spain or The Fat Duck in UK.
George Cloony
Why Nespresso had chosen star George Cloony as its main ambassador raised curiosity of attendants; the answer: "elegant and classy but not arrogant, he is the perfect brand image".
We listened to an amazing successful story of a company with a sustained annual compound growth rate of more than 35% during the last 7 years. But worth of it? Vincent Termote advices to our future executives and managers: "Go for your dreams, but be coherent; take risks, be innovative, aspire to perfection; go for the extra mail and work with dedication, passion and entrepreneurial spirit."

Wednesday, May 20th, Prof. Dr. Mike Gallivan, Associate Professor in the CIS Department, Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, will present the research seminar entitled:
An Analysis of Coauthorship Antecedents,
Trends, and Outcomes in Business Research
This study examines coauthorship patterns in scholarly research. Formally labeled as the study of "scientific collaboration" in other social science and "hard sciences," we examine both the longitudinal evidence for changes in the frequency of coauthorship, as well as factors that influence researchers' specific choices of coauthors (including personal factors such as same gender and same PhD training institution). We also examine specific outcomes that have been identified as resulting from coauthored research - such as a larger number of citations and longer (page) length of articles. We use a sample of five leading, international scholarly journals from the information systems (IS) field to test of our hypotheses - in essence, replicating many of these hypotheses that were previously investigated in related business disciplines such as Finance and Economics. We found support for nearly all our hypotheses. However, we found an unusual result regarding the relationship between number of coauthors and number of citations in several top journals - with the number of coauthors positively related to number of citations in MIS Quarterly and European Journal of IS, but inversely-related in Information Systems Research. Through several post hoc analyses (including controlling for the type of research study and the authors' home countries), we explore the reasons why studies with more coauthors are cited more often in MIS Quarterly and European Journal of IS, but less frequently-cited in ISR.
This talk is based on a manuscript that has been submitted to a special issue of Journal of AIS on the topic of Social Network Analysis. It is in the process of being revised-and-resubmitted.
The seminar will be held in Maria de Molina 7, room D301 , at 15:00.
Please confirm your attendance to Tertulias@ie.edu
If you would like to meet with Prof. Dr. Mike Gallivan, please contact Prof. Gregory Truman (gregory.truman@ie.edu).

He holds a Ph.D. from the Sloan School of Management at MIT and both MBA and Master's in Health Administration degrees from the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to starting his PhD, he worked for Andersen Consulting in San Francisco for 3 years.
Mike's research focuses on individual and organizational factors that influence implementation of technology innovations among managers, IT professionals, and other knowledge workers. He is also interested in interorganizational alliances supported by IT, IT offshore outsourcing (especially in China), managing distributed teams, and innovative methods for IS research, including event study analysis, meta-analysis, social network analysis, and structural equation modeling.
Mike serves as Associate Editor for MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management Information Systems, and Information, Technology & People, and is a member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Information Technology. His research has been published in MIS Quarterly, European Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Management Information Systems, Information and Organization, Journal of AIS, Information Systems Journal, Information, Technology & People, Database for Advances in IS, and IEEE Transactions on Professional Communication.
Mike is active with ACM SIGADIT and ACM Special Interest Group on MIS (having served as General Conference Chair for SIG MIS in 2005, and will again serve as General Conference Chair in 2010, when the conference will be held in Vancouver, Canada). The IE Tango Club has been slow to get going this year. We were unfortunate to lose our very own professor in Burak due to his recent sojourn in the US. In the meantime, we have been pursuing classes with his partner, Carmen. Due to the poor attendance at the last workshop it has not been possible to organise more classes specifically for IE students, however the die-hards have remained true to the cause.
Now there is a new opportunity and the IE Tango Club would like to invite all of you have come previously, plus all of the new students that are interested in learning this exciting and senual dance.
TANGO WORKSHOP - BEGINNERS
Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th May
Saturday - 18:00-21:00
Sunday - 12:00-18:00
(Total: 6 hours)

A quote from Carmen: (translate it with Google)
Now a few notes from me:
The class will be in Spanish, but this is not a problem, trust me. I do not speak Spanish well and I did many dancing classes in Spanish before I learned any Spanish (tango, like all the best dancing, is in Spanish!). Remember that dancing is not about talking, but about moving your body. Watch and learn. However, if it is bothering you, remember that if there are a group of IE people, there is probably someone who can translate for you a bit.
I have been taking classes in tango for about 5 years and I have to say that Carmen (with Burak, of course) is the best and nicest teacher I have ever had. I have seen her dancing at milongas in Madrid and she is a great dancer too. She will make sure that you get the technique and is very patient when explaining, even if the language is a problem. I have been attending Carmen´s classes since February and my tango has improved a lot!
I encourage you to contact Carmen directly. There are more details on her website and you can email her (usually easier if you have trouble with speaking Spanish on the phone). Be aware a deposit is required.
If you have any questions, please contact me. I will try to answer them. If you are already a top notch tango dancer, let me know and we can organize to visit some milongas. Those taking the beginners workshop should be able to join us for the milongas also. We would like some help on the committee of the club, so we will soon have a general meeting where people interested in helping out can come and volunteer.
I look forward to hearing from you.
