Kick-Off Meeting 18 12 2008 004.jpgIE Consulting Club Kick-Off meeting took place on Thursday December 18th 2008, with close to 60 students in attendance. After a short networking moment, where participants gathered in Serrano and shared pizzas, the newly elected IE Consulting Club Leadership Team provided an overview of the 2009 team composition and interests, as well as plans for the following months.

Kick-Off Meeting 18 12 2008 013.jpg
Before the presentation we had a briefing on how IE graduates are placed in today's Consulting Industry provided by Wim Zwaenepoel, representing the IE Career Management Centre. With a difficult job market, he emphasized the importance of being prepared for the interview process in order to ensure success.

Kick-Off Meeting 18 12 2008 017.jpg

The focus this year for the IE Consulting Club Leadership Team will be creating awareness about firms and opportunities, preparing students for the selection process, and continuing to develop the IE brand within the consulting industry. The Leadership Team also shared results of the Consulting Club Survey, where members had conveyed areas of interest, firms and regions to be targeted, and programs that the membership

would like to see and help organize. The survey helped inform the overall strategy and was defined as a 3-phased process in which all activities will be serving the strategy: Understand, Get Ready and Connect.

Throughout the year, programs will be aligned to this strategy with events such as a Consulting Day, workshops and seminars, alumni networking events, and a Case Competition.

SAVE THE DATE!

"Consulting and Social Responsibility: The Impact & Opportunities"

1st Annual IE Socially Responsible Consulting Day
October 13, 2008 - In Aula Magna

Co Sponsored by:

IE Consulting Club & IE Net Impact Chapter

Socially Responsible Consulting Day is an opportunity to explore how the landscape of consulting has changed and will continue changing due to the increased pressures for transparency and accountability. This is especially important as 2008 celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights and as governments, NGO watchdogs, and consumers increasingly call for improved labor, sourcing and environmental standards from corporations.

Through a panel discussion with consultants working in this field, individually directed workshops and a networking reception, you can offer insights related to this year's theme "Consulting and Social Responsibility: The Impact and Opportunities"

Registration for the event will open up on Monday, October 6th.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact:

Santiago Iñiguez, Dean of Instituto de Empresa, opened the event and welcomed the distinguished speakers: Ricardo Damborenea, Senior Partner at Bain & Company, Lorenzo Milans Del Bosch, Director of Oliver Wyman and Luis Ceniga, Lead for SPAI at Accenture. Professor Manuel Becerra, the IE Accenture Chair, introduced and moderated the panel discussion.

This year's theme at the discussion panel was "Strategies for sustainable growth in the era of globalization", which is one of the hottest topics in the industry nowadays - for both entrepreneurs and multinational companies. The discussion included both models drawn from professional consulting best-practices and real-life cases.

The theme encouraged an active debate between the students and speakers, which was indeed insightful and stimulating.

The workshops session started after a 30 minute coffee-break that was kindly sponsored by the invited firms. Students had the opportunity to discuss the specific cases presented by each firm's manager, as well as network with the invited guests.

Eduardo Avendano and Javier Roa, of Accenture, conducted the workshop "Geographic expansion in Financial Services: How to suceed".

Diego Gigliani, manager at Oliver Wyman lead the workshop entitled "How to grow profitably in a nearly-monopolistic market environment".

The third workshop was handled by Nicolás López, of Bain & Company, and students were called to discuss issues of "Strategic consultancy in the private equity sector: learn to think like them".

cuadros.jpg

This event was organized by Mathieu Frison, Pedro Trinite, Cesare Valenti, Alessio Rugeri, Oksana Avdeeva and Eduardo Martinez, all IE 2007 students, with the support and help of the Careers Management Centre. The event was sponsored by participating consulting firms.

The C-Club team thanks all IE students that gave feedback on the 4th edition of the C-Day.

Key learning of the event:
Sustainable growth is a valuable outcome that follows the implementation of an effective, and unique strategy. All speakers gave precious insights on how the consulting industry can offer companies to manage this process effectively and efficiently. Today's clients are becoming more sophisticated and are demanding a real transfer of skills and know-how, instead of the classical one-off engagement. Strategy consulting firms are responding to this need by offering more sophisticated and integrated solutions. Different strategies in this regard were illustrated by the speakers. And while short term results are always important, the primary focus is the long term relationship aimed to provide clients' shareholders outstanding returns on their investments. Some topics discussed were: diversification, business process analysis, competitive advantages, organic and buy-out growth strategies, and many others.

The discussion included both models drawn from professional consulting best-practices and real-life cases.

The theme encouraged an active debate between the students and speakers, which was indeed insightful and stimulating.

The workshops session started after a 30 minutes coffee-break that was kindly sponsored by the invited firms, and where students had the opportunity to discuss the lectures on the workshops as well as network with the invited guests.

The event was sponsored by participating consulting firms.

Growth is a valuable outcome that follows the implementation of an effective, relative, and unique strategy, and all speakers gave precious insights on how the consulting industry can offer companies to manage this process effectively and efficiently. Today's clients are becoming more sophisticated and are demanding a real transfer of skills and know-how, instead of the classical one-off engagement. Strategy consulting firms are responding to this need by offering a more sophisticated and integrated solutions. Different strategies in this regard were illustrated by the speakers. And while short term results are always important, the focus is becoming more focused on the long term relationship aimed to provide clients' shareholders outstanding returns on their investments. Some of topics discussed were: diversification, business process analysis, competitive advantages, organic and buy-out growth strategies, and many others.

Built on last year's success, on 9 June Instituto de Empresa hosted the second edition of the Strategy Consulting Day: a major opportunity for students and alumni to meet and discuss emerging industry trends and up-to-date, real-life consultancy issues with top executives from AT Kearney, Booz Allen Hamilton, Mercer Management Consulting and Monitor Group.

Over 150 participants - Instituto de Empresa students, alumni and faculty members- joined the different workshops held by participating firms and followed subsequent panel discussions.

Meinrad Spenger (IMBA99), currently working for McKinsey & Company, conducted the workshop "Anything but Chardonnay!" - imitation and standardization as strategies for emerging product markets.

The theme "Challenges for Global Players in Emerging Markets" stimulated active debate, with students and alumni sharing their thoughts on and insights into the consulting field.

The event was organized by Chandran Fernando, Dirk Alois Peter Hickert, Jorge Fernandes, María Mercé Serra Pujol, Sara Caicedo, Stephanie Krahenmann and Udo Franz La Roche, all IMBA 2005 students, with the support and help of the Careers Management Centre and with the sponsorship of the management consulting firms invited to participate.

Santiago Íñiguez, Dean of Instituto de Empresa, opened the event and presented the speakers, all from their respective Madrid offices: Dirck Forquignon, Principal at AT Kearny, David Suárez, Principal at Booz Allen Hamilton, Jordi Duñach, Managing Director of Mercer Management Consulting, and Carlos Araoz, Group Leader of Monitor Group. David Allen, Director of the IE Strategy Department, introduced and moderated the final panel discussion.

All speakers highlighted that the consulting industry is changing rapidly as firms seek measurable value-creation from projects. Clients want implementation of strategies and a closer partnership in which rewards and risks are shared with the consulting firm. After a period of heady growth, the internet crash and lower corporate profits have led to consolidation and a movement toward fewer generalists and more specialists. In short, some of the glamour has gone, but consulting firms are now doing more for their clients.
