"Consulting and Social Responsibility: The Impact & Opportunities"
1st Annual IE Socially Responsible Consulting Day
October 13, 2008 - In Aula Magna
Co Sponsored by:
IE Consulting Club & IE Net Impact Chapter
Socially Responsible Consulting Day is an opportunity to explore how the landscape of consulting has changed and will continue changing due to the increased pressures for transparency and accountability. This is especially important as 2008 celebrates the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights and as governments, NGO watchdogs, and consumers increasingly call for improved labor, sourcing and environmental standards from corporations.
Through a panel discussion with consultants working in this field, individually directed workshops and a networking reception, you can offer insights related to this year's theme "Consulting and Social Responsibility: The Impact and Opportunities"
Registration for the event will open up on Monday, October 6th.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact:
Shari Carlson (scarlson.imba2008@alumno.ie.edu)
Amber Sprague (asprague.imba2008@alumno.ie.edu)
Global Village was organized by the IE Net Impact Chapter, but it was the impressive dedication and resourcefulness of all involved (table coordinators, table workers, ticket sellers, student office, and the IE maintenance and planning departments) who went out of their way
to make this event the resounding success that it was. THANK YOU to everyone who helped prior, during and after the event! As in the past, Global Village's mission is two-fold: to celebrate the international diversity of IE and to raise money to benefit an NGO. I am
thrilled to announce a resounding success in both areas.
The event raised over 2.500 Euros (!!) for the global non-profit Ayuda en Acción (Action Aid) . We were excited to have them present at the event to highlight their programs and impact around the world. Ayuda en Acción will be using the funds for the following program:
"Awareness Programme and Cooperation Policy on HIV / AIDS: Putting a face to the pandemic in Latin Americas"
Joining efforts for the integration of HIV / AIDS into development plans of both national and international agencies is one of our goals. As it is supporting civil associations and networks of people living with HIV / AIDS, community organizations and women's, youth groups to strengthen their prevention efforts, care and treatment to these people and their environment.
This requires an awareness-raising and political impact that SAA done with actions such as photographic exhibition in Positive Lives, which this year for the first time will feature photos that show the magnitude of the pandemic in Latin Americas. This chapter in Latin American Positive Lives will be opened at the International Conference on AIDS to be held in Mexico from 3 to August 8 and assisting governments and organizations from all over the world, and then used for community workshops.
The preparations for the event started bright and early thanks to the IE Maintenance Department . This year the event was moved to the Serrano 99 terrace which gave the students the ability to work on their tables during their breaks - creating excitement as the rest of the students saw the tables become increasingly colorful hour by hour.
At 3pm the event kicked into full swing as students filed out of the classrooms straight into the event. Over 300 people attended this year's event!! We saw faculty, administration, students and partners from IMBA, MBA, the Executive MBA, and Masters in Management.
The regions and countries represented were:
Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Taiwan, United Kingdom, USA, Venezuela and a mutli-country table of Egypt, Palestine and Lebanon.
We also had the tIEnda store selling IE items andSilvana Ojeda (Partner to Martin Moscadi, IMBA '08) selling handmade crafts , both giving a percentage of their proceeds as a donation to the event.
As for the social success of the event, we were fortunate to have two successful events. Due to the threat of inclement weather, Global Village was moved from June 10th to the June 19th.
Highlights included demonstrations in Capoeira, Tango, Salsa and even some Texas line dancing. Traditional costumes abounded with Yukatas at the Japanese table, Cowboy hats at the US table, Kurta-pyjamas and a plethora of football (also known as soccer) jerseys!
Among the seemingly endless food and beverage selection, people feasted on homemade Peruvian delights, paella, hot dogs, Vegetable Pakoras, homemade polish cookies and bonbonbums then washed it down with Sol beer, Pisco sours, caipirinhas, aguardiente, sangria and Pimms (you are going to have ask the Brits for that recipe!). And that list is just a portion of what was available!
Music poured out from almost every table promoting impromptu dancing. Event goers were also able to enjoy a relaxing smoke at the hooka, be entertained by the "Diablo Cojuelo" (character from Dominican Republic Carnival), and get a henna tattoo at the India Table.
But like all good things, this too had to come to an end. And in true IE spirit, the fun continued even during the clean up - music still pouring from the tables and chatter filling the air as the cleanup crew and impromptu volunteers slowly but surely put the Serrano 99 terrace back in order. Wrapping up another installation of the most diverse and inclusive student run event of the year!
Thank you, again, to EVERYONE... for coordinating, for cooking, for cleaning, and most of all, for attending!

What is the Global Village? Just imagine having a taste of every culture represented in the students of IE, all in one place. Imagine walking into the terrace in Serrano 105 in a sunny afternoon and finding a multi-color buffet where you can taste the Spanish "jamon", with a Mexican "Corona" beer, followed by Italian pasta, Chinese rice or a typical Indian snack, and finish drinking a good home-made Russian vodka and smoking a "sisha" typical in Turkey and the Arab nations. |

On the 17th of April the IE Business School Net Impact Chapter attempted a radical new fundraising event never before seen at IE Business School – a Professor’s Auction.
The students of each section voted upon as the ones they would like to have dinner. We then approached those professors to see if they were willing to donate their time as well as a dinner for this fundraiser.
We were delighted with the overall positive response from the teachers and were able to sign up 9 of the 11 we approached! Students formed bidding groups in advance and came ready and determined the day of the event to bid generously for their professor of choice. Two dynamic students took the lead on auctioning the event, Marco Guarda and Ricardo Pedraza, and were able to work the crowd like professionals. Two amazing bids came in at €350 for Gonalzo Garland and the same amount for Juan Santaló! At the end of the day, we were able to raise about €1500 to raise money for Kabila, a local non-profit that supports African immigrants in Spain (www.kabila.org). Beyond the great response and turn out (despite the dodgy weather!), we already have students asking if we are going to do it again.
The professors (and administration) that participated were:

Ignacio de la Vega

Last week, on March 5th, IE Women in Business Club (IE WIB) organized, in collaboration with IE Finance Club, IE Net Impact Chapter and Club de Emprendedores Colombianos, a conference on Microfinance.
The conference started with a financial course on microfinance institutions, their target (self-employed poor, especially women, who have little or no access to formal credit), risks, assets and empowerment, conducted by Prof. Gutiérrez.
Marcela Torres Córdoba, IMBA08, Vice-President of IE Net Impact Chapter and of Club de Emprendedores Colombianos, illustrated the key concepts with her own microcredits project in Colombia.
Please, visit IE WIB Blog to read the article on this event and post any comments.
IE Women in Business in cooperation with the IE Finance, IE Net Impact Chapter and Colombian Entrepreneurs Clubs are delighted to invite you to the conference: "MICROFINANCE. The world of microloans: a women's world".
Microfinance refers to the supply of small amount loans, savings, and other financial and non-financial services to low income people. Microfinance programs have generally targeted poor women. It is an activity that has grown above the average of the industry and we invite you to find out about its origins, development and the reasoning behind the target segment and its high performance indicators.

GLOBAL VILLAGE, SECOND EDITION
Wednesday, the 4th of July, the Global Village took place at Instituto de Empresa. It was organized by IE Net Impact chapter but we would like to thank everyone who helped out in any manner. These people include the organizing committee, the country stand coordinators, those who prepared food or presentations, and all those who attended and helped support this cause.

The event raised around 2.000 euros which will be split between four NGOs: : Koinonia (Kenya), Skip (Perú), Un Techo para mi país (Latinoamérica) and New Gate to Peace Foundation (Jerusalem) further to the election of each student.
Do not forget to click on the pics to see them bigger!
At about 3 in the afternoon, many people began the preparations, led by Stephane (IMBA07) who took charge of the logistics. At the door, the rest of the people were met by Guillermo (IMBA07), Lau (MBA07), Sole (MBA07), and Brent (IMBA07). More than 200 people attended! They were IMBAs, MBAs from September and February intakes, the Master in Telecom and Digital Business, Master in Finance and Marketing.
The Arab table, well, capet and the Samba guys
Spain is different, indeed, serving paella with a polo shirt... Ecuador and Vive la France!

The regions and countries represented were: Arab Countries (Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon among others), Brazil, Central America (Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panamá), Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Macedonia, México, Netherlands, Peru, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Switzerland and USA.
Germans and Indians, BBQ + TATOOS
The Global Village had a dual purpose: to raise money for the NGOs and to celebrate the diversity of countries at IE. IE has a very international student body, so we should take advantage to learn about the cultures of others in all aspects.
Japan and Eastern European Countries, here Macedonia, Slovenia and Bulgaria
The typical dress and dance, the food and drink, even manners of smoking were demonstrated. We saw how typical Indian tattoos are done using inks brought from this land, which will last several weeks! We tried tasty German sausages, arepas Colombianas, Spanish tortilla, Swiss raclette, Brasilian guarana, or Portuguese Port. It was an advantage to be able to smoke sisha over the luxurious Asian carpets surrounded by classmates.
¡Viva Mexico!, the Netherlands and Russia Na zdarovia!

Under the hot sun, Cervezas Sol were enjoyed very cold, one of the brands of beer that the Mexican community likes, and also everyone else too. At a certain moment of the afternoon, the time of the Brasilian Samba arrived, and everyone began to dance. The Partners Club was present too, as Karina’s presence showed. Otmar, as always, took very good photos.
Peru, great Ceviche! and Spain: tortilla, croquetas and paella
When the sun went down and it was time to end the event, it was very difficult to accomplish since the unforgettable moment meant no one wanted to go home.
Portugal with the Spanish Professor, and Didn´t you know? now Switzerland is between Peru and Ecuador!
Again, thanks for participating and making this one of the most interesting and diverse events at IE!

We had great time! Thank you Sol!

Chapter Best Practices
Instituto de Empresa´s Global Village was chosen by Net Impact (www.netimpact.org) as one of the Best Practice Profiles to be shared among more than 120 chapters. Many of these topics were based on in-depth interviews and survey results. Congratulations to event organizers, company partners, and IE´s Net Impact chapter.
Instituto de Empresa's Global Village
Summary:
Insituto de Empresa this year (2006) had students from 49 different countries. The idea was to organize an event in which every student would prepare something (food or drink) from his/her own country. Global Village was a party in a diverse environment where cultures from all over the world were represented. Each entrant/participant bought a ticket and the money collected supported the treatments of children with West Syndrome. It was a combination of a social event that fostered cultural awareness/understanding and a fundraising event for the "Fundacion de West".
Process:
The success of the event was dependent on the students' involvement (prepare things) and participation (come and buy tickets). There was ongoing communication based on teasers as well as a customized approach (e.g. special approach to the Chinese community, the Greek community etc.) so that they feel the ownership of the event. Teasers and reminders were different every time in order not to bore them (e.g. every e-mail or poster included new information such as having pools filled with ice to have the drinks fresh, having music, or things that a country will have in its stand). At the same time, in order not to limit ourselves to students, faculty and staff were also invited. Ticket sales begun 1-2 weeks before the event and the team organizing Global Village went to different classes (for students) and offices (for faculty and staff). Tickets were sold also at a centralized place (International Student office) and at the entrance of the event. There was in-kind sponsorship for drinks and snacks (a suggestion is to have this in case participants are many and there is not enough food prepared). There are many things that can enrich the event such as a contest for the best stand, national dances, information about the countries and the problems they are facing etc. Small details such as the place, the time and date of the event can be crucial. Next year we will approach companies for money sponsorship rather than just in-kind donations.
People:
The team consisted of 6 people. 3 were actively involved from the beginning and the rest helped 1-2 days before and during the day of the event when the tasks were more. Their roles involved: communication with the NGO, logistics, promotion to students and IE Personnel, ticket sales and operational things during the event.
Key Stakeholders:
Administration support was very easy to gain since at IE; students' initiatives are truly supported. In this case, there was also a good cause behind it, so IE was more than helpful. It was a great initiative to have fun while doing good.
Tools:
The tools were simple. Since our target was easy to reach, word of mouth was crucial. We depended on e-mail, posters, presentations in classes and 1-1 approaches.
Outcome:
A lot of people joined the event. There was representation from many countries (some had national costumes, others got in-kind sponsorship from restaurants, photo exhibitions, local products sold and the revenues were donated to children with West etc) and everyone had a very good time. The money raised is sufficient for monthly physiotherapies for 40 children with West.
Recommendations:
Involving people is crucial in such an initiative. They need to feel ownership and create excitement about the event. Location is important (spacious, proper infrastructure, possibility for inside and outside due to weather changes) as well as date/time (students have a heavy schedule...a Friday is usually better in order not only to prepare things but also be able to join). Communication should start some weeks before the event.
You can see this information online at the Net Impact site

Global Village was a celebration of cultures and diversity where students prepared something typical from their countries. The result was a party where students and IE Staff got together and had a great time. The money raised from the tickets sold, was donated to the West Syndrome Foundation: 1,500 Euros enough for monthly pool physiotherapies for 50 children.
A big thanks to the students of the 18 countries which prepared something: Germany, Mexico, Argentina, Turkey, Norway, England, Switzerland, Brazil, China, India, Costa Rica, Georgia, Chile, Portugal, Greece, Spain, Egypt, USA.
Also a big thanks to the Students office which was more than supportive and gave us a budget for the event, the Partners club, that contributed a lot in the preparation of the stands, the Marketing club that donated cava, the Gourmet club that donated a whole jamón ibérico and wine, Helena from Brazil who sold great bikinis (www.dunasswimwear.com) and donated part of the revenues, Justine from China who gave an artistic touch by selling her pictures and also supported the West Syndrome Foundation with her sales, the two Indian restaurants that donated food - Great initiative from our Indian community (who also sold Indian products and donated profits), our in-kind sponsors: Corona, Old el Paso and Coca-Cola and of course everyone who came and contributed.
On behalf of Net Impact Chapter and the children with West Syndrome a big thanks to all of you!
