June 03, 2008, Madrid: IE Telecom Club organized its speaker series with a distinguished speaker Mr. Alejandro Romero, Director Strategic Relationships, Yahoo, Iberia. The topic for the event was "Yahoo & Its Mobile Strategy". The event was attended by the alumni of IE Business School. Yahoo is trying to be an early bird in the field of mobile search by doing partnerships with the leading telecom operators. It has created a different eco system for the mobile users and enhances the experience through their new product "Yahoo One Search". They have engineered different kind of search pages for the relatively smaller mobile phone screens.
With Yahoo One Connect, they provide users the ability to control and access their friend lists from various Social networking sites like Facebook, LinkedIN and Orkut. This Mobile strategy also finds synergy with the strategy of Telecom operators who are finding out ways to increase their ARPU (Average Revenue Per User). As more services on Mobile Internet transforms into more data usage by the subscribers. Yahoo's mobile applications are compatible to almost all the Operating systems running on mobile phones like Windows Mobile, Symbian etc. They are extremely cautious about the Google's entry into the mobile market with their new proprietary mobile handset operating system called "Android". Google has already been supported by the leading handset makers like LG and Samsung in this cause.
Yahoo is keeping all its options open to remain in this dynamic and growing world of Mobile Internet.

April 23, 2008, Madrid: IE Telecom Club organized its speaker series with an eminent speaker Mr. Agustin Nunez, Director for Innovation Services and New Devices, Telefónica, España. The topic for the event was "Predicting the Future of Mobile Business". The event was attended by Ricardo Perez, Program Director of Master of Management Telecom & Digital Business and management students.
Although Telefonica is expected to touch the customer base of 300 million worldwide by 2010, its revenue may not increase proportionally. There is a new threat poised to its traditional revenue source namely voice calls revenue. The threat is poised in the form of free calls over internet using VoIP (Skype). Mr. Nunez talked about the new revenue sources for the telecom service providers.
The future revenue source is mainly based on the Data Traffic from the mobile devices. To encash that Telefonica has started open mobile forum http://www.open.movilforum.com/en/. This initiative aims at capturing the talent and innovation of the independent API developers to create wonderful applications on SMS, MMS, and GSM etc., which can be used by the Telefonica Mobile phone customers for free by downloading those applications from the website.
"By 2012, worldwide telecom consumer spending on non-voice mobile services, from music, to search, mobile TV and video downloads, location based services, games, gambling and mobile payment services will exceed $250 Billion. But is Europe's mobile industry ready to successfully monetise it?" Source Financial Times.

A big player in the telecom European market, Deutsche Telekom, was the second guest for the TechIE Club.
On the 28th of March, we received Stefan Behrendt, Senior VP for Corporate Development & International Business in T-Online, now part of Deutsche Telekom. Mr. Behrendt gave a detailed presentation of how the Telecom market is today being mixed with the internet business.
Lots of players converging like: operators, hardware and software vendors, service retailers, media companies, IT services providers, device manufacturers, infrastructure builders and finally lots of internet companies, leveraging specially the web 2.0 movement.
That's changing the way business is being done, as corporations are switching its former vertical structure with different business lines into a more horizontal one, involving most of the actors in the value chain.

Techie Tuesday at IE was a smashing success!
We will hold a meeting next Wednesday 17th of January in room P-210 in Pinar starting at 4pm. The main idea will be to begin shaping the TechIE Day: topics, dates, possible companies, sharing responsabilities, etc.
Let us introduce you the TechIE Club blog!
Any suggestions / comments are welcome to techie.club@ie.edu
Dear TechIE people!
As we talked about in the first meeting for the Club, we will hold TOMORROW a pre-Christmas meeting to discuss about specific activities to carry out during 2007, in room P-413 (Pinar, 18), starting at 4 pm.
Hopefully the meeting won't be too long for those of us finishing works before holidays it won't be too time consuming. For the people that cannot attend the meeting and want to suggest something, please send an email to techie.club@ie.edu, and Merry Christmas and see you next year!
Summarizing a bit some of the things that we discussed during the presentation in our first meeting:
TechIE Day to be organized perhaps by end of April, beginning or May. I'd like MBAs, IMBAs, EXMBA, etc. to tell us depending on their schedule, which could be the best time to attend (depending on exams, projects, etc.), so IE people is more willing to come.
Brainstorming: concretized in expert panels (and?). Some of our targets could be to try to bring Enrique Dans and/or/vs Martin Varsavsky, which are very related to IE.
Blogs / newsletter : this requires continuity
Publish publications, articles, focusing on business development plans: collaboration required among us, as this involves certain workload added to our Programmes
Partnering with other Clubs for certain mixed panels (GBE, Net Impact, ... ?)
Promote IE among today's new internet media (?): videos, content,... The idea would be to make IE present in those places where American Universities may be taking the lead
The Club should provide some kind of 'output' to make visible our actions
Do you want to understand the business around all the strange acronyms around telecoms? Do you know the new business opportunities behind the combination of your mobile phone, TV and Internet? Today we´re living the Renaissance of the Information Technologies. After the glorious days in the end of the 90´s and the "Dark Age" of the bubble burst, new movements like the Web 2.0 and the Convergence progress are changing the "Digital Economy".
Based on these thoughts we have come up with the idea of creating a TechIE Club. We expect it to be a forum and a resource in IE for the students interested in this world. Among our proposed activities, we want to prepare a "TechIE Day" for next spring, maybe other conferences/events and also to be a reference point in exchange of ideas about this exciting market (maybe you want to create the "next big thing" in internet?).
What do you want TechIE Club to be? We will make a brief presentation on the 30th of November at 4 pm at class P-312 (C/Pinar, 18). Those of you that are interested, please send us an email with your ideas and suggestions for the Club as well as if you’re willing to attend the presentation session to techie.club@ie.edu
See you @TechIE!
