To this point, our MBA has been amazing both as a learning and a living experience. It has been a year of transition, which we believe will soon allow us to make a real difference in our professional lives. We feel much more competent, more creative, and more open-minded than ever before.

Among all the school related events that we have had the chance to participate in, some of them deserve more attention when being told to our peers, families and friends. Now, we are particularly proud to tell this story, not only to our closest friends at IE, but also to everyone interested in pursuing an MBA here. On January 29 through the 31st, two of us traveled to Italy on our own accord to represent IE Business School at the 6th Annual 2010 MBA Ski and Snowboard Cup organized by SDA Bocconi. The event was an incredible experience and we took full advantage of this great networking opportunity and to promote IE's already respectable name. However, the fact that made this event all the more enticing was our success in the tournament. With a 4th place finish in the Ski race and a 3rd place finish in the Snowboard race, we had the best overall result as a school, taking 1st place in the entire tournament!

We were impressed by the fact that the two of us (the smallest team there) could have reached such an excellent result, and at the same time we were proud to represent our new "Spanish" origin. In fact, we had the chance to show several business schools exactly what diversity means at IE. We are two students living in Madrid, an American and an Italian. By being awarded with a first place prize in front of 150 people, many of them coming from SDA Bocconi, where the 60% of the class are Italian nationals, we did just that. Both of us had this ideology in mind after being awarded by Dr. Alberto Grando and Dr. Valter Lazzari, respectively SDA Bocconi's Dean and Masters' Director (see the photo).

Unfortunately there's no picture of the race because the official photographer gave up after few competitors raced for adverse weather conditions (in a few words, he was freezing with -12° and a 60 km/h wind!)

We are moving it up a gear this time, so come and see how you manage!

We have chosen to get an instructor to give us a few pointers in "en linea".  This is a bit different to what you may be familiar with if you are from Latin America (except Puerto Rico) or are used to "Cuban-style".  It is the style that we find most danced here in Madrid and it will give you a chance to try something different.

The second workshop is in "Rueda Casino".  This a really fun form of salsa that is danced in a big group, where everyone dances the same steps, as called by the leader, and where everyone gets to change partners in time with the music.  It looks great!

I participated in the bid for the first time last week and I have been so lucky! I want to thank the IE Football Club for giving me the chance to enjoy a really great game. 

Real Madrid were incredibly 6-1 up at home to Real Betis at half-time after the incredible 45 opening minutes. In fact, all seven goals were scored before the break, with captain Raul and Huntelaar both scoring braces for Madrid to add to further efforts from team-mates Higuain and Sergio Ramos.

Before last Saturday I had only dreamed of sitting at magnificent Bernabeu Stadium. It is by far the most emblematic stadium I have ever visited: its unparalleled atmosphere make it the Europe's most spectacular footballing stage.

As a part of our goal to reach enough funds to have the club running and to be able to provide fun for our members, we have organized a set of fundraising raffles for all of IE students.

The winner gets two tickets to watch the Real Madrid team at the Santiago Bernabeu and here we have the story of the experience of the one of the past winners.

Knowing that you are a few blocks away from the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, it's a unique opportunity that is not present everyday.

The IE Football Club, which I have to congratulate for the organization and energy, and the Student Office had a raffle to see the Real Madrid. I won the tickets and it was going to be my first time watching Real Madrid. It was a

critical match because many variables were playing at the same time (cutting points against Barcelona FC, leading La Liga). Going out of the Bernabeu metro station towards the stadium with all the fans, and watching all the faces wishing and praying for a victory was an amazing experience. The game was great in terms of suspense and performance but..., sadly, Real Madrid lost the game. This is football, sometimes you win and others you lose and that's the excitement of the game, because until the game it's over everything can happen.

Thanks again to the IE Football Club for this incredible experience!

Artur Fernando and Javier

2006 MILP Alumni Artur, Fernando and Javier, participated in the SDA BOCCONI Ski Cup celebrated in Sestriere last February 29.

Artur got a second possition in Snowboard, Fernando was 5th and Javier 9th in Ski. Apart from a great time they had the opportunity to exchage business cards, among others, with the Bocconi Alumni Association President, Ricardo Monti, Senior Partner & Managing Director at BCG Italy.

The skydiving trip to Lillo was a soaring success!!!

This year, IE’s crew was sponsored by Ambilamp Association for recycling and conservation of the natural environment, and fought hard in a regatta with strong winds, rough seas and fierce competition.

At the end of September, the fourth edition of the MBA’s Cup regatta took place in Santa Margherita Ligure, Italy as in previous years. This event, which has become a classic, includes the participation of 21 of the world’s most important Business Schools and over 400 of their students.

The IE crew -formed by IMBA05 Johannes Tinsobin (Austria), Pablo Divasson (Spain), Carlos Vázquez (Spain), IMBA06 Karim Kreaa (Syria), Laura Fernández (Argentina), Wim Zwaenepoel (Belgium), Alberto Ordiales (Mexico)and IMBA07 Nicolas Dilger (Germany)- finished the first day’s sailing in an extraordinary 2nd place position, but due to an unfortunate incident with the Rotterdam BS yacht, ended up in 11th position by the event’s end.

The MBA’s Cup is a unique opportunity for business students, brought together by their passion for sailing, to make contacts and to exchange ideas amongst themselves, with business leaders and with those who push forward major changes at the international level. In today’s world, sustainability is one of the most important issues in business, and for this it is especially pertinent that our sponsor this year was AMBILAMP, a non profit-making company, whose aim is to promote the protection of the natural environment, through the creation of an integrated management system for the treatment of wastes produced by used lamp-bulbs.

IE is ranked amongst the world’s top 10 business schools and comes Europe’s 1st in the sustainability ranking published by The Aspen Institute. This ranking evaluates the integration of social and environment issues in the curricula of MBA programs. The link between Ambilamp and IE is Juan Carlos Enrique Moreno, General Manager of Ambilamp and alumnus of IE’s Executive MBA program (1990).

Following the sucess of recently finished IE Winter Football Tournament, inscription will take place for those teams that want to take part in the Spring-Summer 7 a-side Football tournament.

Please select the players for your teams carefully so that you won't miss ANY of the matches (teams that miss matches or do not supply a referee when requested will be disqualified).
Taking into account that the matches will (almost certainly) be played on Sunday afternoons, form your teams and send an email tothe Football Organisation Committee (FOC).
Registration will close on 8 March at 2pm.
Please complete and return the attached Excel spreadsheet.
During the week commencing 12 March we will organise a meeting with the team captains for the collection of the registration money (140 Euros) and also to convey more details about the tournament.
It's very important that the captain is somebody who can be responsible for their team and maintain a good contact with the FOC.

The time has come to have some confrontations...
The IE Tennis Tournament is going to start next week around the 17th of February. It will take place during several week-ends. In order to participate to the tournament, please register here before this Sunday 11th.

Llegó el momento de pasar a cosas más serias...
El torneo de Tenis empieza el 17 de Febrero y se prolongará durante unos cuantos fines de semana. Si queréis participar, registraos aquí antes del Domingo 11 de febrero.

Basically, the best players of the tournament will represent the IE team at the MBAT and the IE Tennis champion will be rewarded with the Trophy above. There is a fee of 2 euros for participating to the tournament. This does not include the tennis court reservation (no more that 4 euros per person per play) that will be paid according to the number of times each one plays.
Looking forward to seeing you all for a nice experience. There is only one rule, be fair-play!

Los mejores jugadores del torneo podrán representar, si quieren, al equipo de Tenis del IE en el MBAT. Además, el mejor recibirá el fantástico trofeo que veis arriba. SISTEMA DE COMPETICIÓN:

TODAS LAS PAREJAS JUGARÁN 8 PARTIDOS CON DIFERENTES PAREJAS.
Se formarán grupos de 4 parejas al azar todos contra todos en partidos de 1 set con tie break. Una vez resuelto cada grupo se formarán 4 nuevos grupos en función de la clasificación obtenida: Los 4 primeros masculinos y femeninos de cada grupo irán al grupo 1 los 4 segundos al Grupo 2 y a así sucesivamente.

Cada grupo dispondrá de 2 pistas, reduciendo al máximo la espera entre los enfrentamientos. En caso de empate prevalecerá el enfrentamiento directo.

De este modo, todas las parejas jugarán 8 partidos con independencia de los resultados que obtengan.

El campeón del grupo 1 será el campeón del Torneo.

Due to large and increasing demand for football, the Football Organisation Committee (FOC) has come up with some changes to accommodate this; so please read this post carefully in order to remain on the ball!

We are organising our first 7x7 football tournament on the 17th of December. From this date onwards there will be a tournament every Sunday (except in holidays and examination weeks of course).

What are you expected to do?

- Form your own team of 7-10 players.
- The captain of your team has to register the team with us via email by the 13th of December (3:00 pm).
- Each team will have to commit for the first 5 tournaments and therefore pay 175 Euros each.
- The captains (and others if they wish) must attend the meeting hosted by the FOC on the 14th of December where they can pay us the above stated fees and we can give further information on the tournament to them.

The football pitch at La Chopera in the El Retiro park (the same place as last thursday) is booked for Wednesday 15/11/06 (tomorrow) 16:30 for ONLY 1 hour.
In the link shown it´s marked as no.23.

PLEASE be there 10 minutes before or on time, otherwise I can not guarantee you a game, as many of you saw last week that we had a lot of people (44 people) who want to play. We have the whole pitch booked just like last week so we can make 4 teams of 7 people in each and NO more. So the first 29 people can play and the late comers will have to try their luck next time.

We are in the process of looking for other pitches near IE that will allow us 2 hours each session (especially on Saturdays) so that even the late comers can have a game.

For the second year running, current students and alumni took part in one of the highlights of the MBA sailing scene. The atmosphere and events were met with great enthusiasm by IE’s eight-member crew.

The MBA’s Cup Regatta, organized by SDA Bocconi, was hosted once again by the prestigious Yacht Club Italiano in the lovely waters of the Genoese coast off Santa Margherita Ligure. What started six years ago as a rather informal regatta for Bocconi alumni has become one of the largest international MBA sports events, with some 400 students from top European and US Business Schools taking part. The competition was as tough as ever, with some very experienced crews on state of the art yachts.

Insituto de Empresa’s eight member crew hailed together from six different countries and was comprised of Johannes Tinsobin IMBA05 (Austria), Carlos Vázquez IMBA05, Pablo Divasson IMBA05 (both from Spain), Marcos Ferrer IMBA06 (Argentina), Wim Zwaenepoel IMBA06 (Belgium), Karim Kreaa IMBA06 (Spain), Alexander Corrie IMBA06 (UK) and Alberto Ordiales IMBA06 (Mexico). They were sailing for the first time together and soon became effective at their tasks. The aptly-called IE boat “Escondida II” was initially hard to find upon our late night arrival, but proved to be a real character and a firm old friend during the races.

IE’s crew was easily the best looking. A uniform of white polos and white caps with the blue IE logo was chosen, because in Italy you always go in style. These good looks attracted the attention of Glamour Magazine, The Sailing Channel and the local crowds.

The 4 day event also featured social events and a conference entitled “A wider, wilder world: competing overseas” with the key note speaker Alfonso Iozzo, CEO of the Italian bank Sao Paolo, giving interesting insights into the European banking industry.

The MBA’s Cup Regatta provides a good opportunity to put into practice essential management skills learned during an MBA (such as planning, forming a strategy, working as a team, making the most of available technologies and tools and competing abroad). The setting was healthy and competitive, and there was the chance to meet present and future managers from top-tier MBA schools, such as Wharton, NYU Stern, Kellogg, Bocconi, INSEAD, IESE and LBS.

The team thoroughly enjoyed the regatta and looks forward to bringing home a trophy next year (after taking “Escondida II” to the America’s Cup in Valencia).

The mens football team, amid TOUGH competition, placed 3rd at the MBA Tournament at HEC.

The performance of our basketball team during the annual Spring Fling in Barcelona was quite impressive.

We managed to reach Semi-Finals, where we played against IESE. Now we really are looking forward to take revenge at the MBA Tournament in Paris, on May 25th to 28th.

Our team is very balanced and we have really good chances to make something memorable in France by winning the tournament!

Sunday, November 27, 2005 marked the "the first of many" IE soccer tournaments. IMBA2005 hosted two guest teams: the promising IMBA (Newbies) 2006 and the seasoned IE Veterans. Prior to the tournament there was much talk about whether IMBA2005 had recovered from its last two international tournaments as well as whether the IE Veterans still had it in them, having dominated past tournaments (MBA Olympics in Paris, Spring Fling in Barcelona and the "big cup" in a the USA). The stadium at Canal Isabel II was filled almost to capacity and dedicated fans endured temperatures reaching 3ºC.

The cup began with the IMBA Newbies challenging the IE Veterans. The IMBA Newbies came out strong, very strong, and quickly showed the "old men" that they meant business. Until the middle of the match, the kids were able to keep the score respectable, only down 2-1. Pretty good considering it was the first time they were playing together. As the IE Veterans put in a third goal, the rhythm of the match quickly turned to their favor and they easily found the net again, bringing the final score to 4-1.

Next, and with only a very short rest, the Newbies found themselves facing IMBA2005. A much more even match, both teams showed lots of intensity as they battled to the very end. The final score: IMBA2005 2 - IMBA Newbies 1.

Lastly, the IE Veterans returned to take on the host team. Both teams began strong; IMBA2005 continuing with their momentum from the previous match and the IE Veterans relieved from a nice little rest. Juan Gali had an incredible opportunity exhibiting awesome precision (he found the goal's frame wonderfully), but almost just wasn't quite enough in this game. The IE Veterans had the chance to put the game away, but Alberto's penalty shot hit the goal post. It has been rumored that Alberto just wanted to show Gali that he could hit the frame just as well. The IE Veterans were, however, able to finish on another scoring chance and walked away with a 1-0 victory and with the copa IE.

IMBA 2005 would like to thank all those who participated in the tournament and send a special thank you to the fans!

September, 2005. The IE Sailing Team, and their yacht “Favela Chic”, won 2nd place at the MBA’s Cup Regatta held on September 23rd and 24th in Santa Margherita Ligure, near Genoa, Italy.

Its eight member crew hailed from seven different countries and was skippered expertly by Johannes Tinsobin. This year, the prestigious regatta brought together around 400 MBA students and alumni from the leading business schools in Europe and the US. Crews and spectators from the 15 participating schools shared their passion for sailing and soaked up the atmosphere in one of Italy’s most picturesque harbours.

The IE team comprised IMBAs 2005 Johannes Tinsobin (Austria), Niels Bjerregaard (Denmark), Edward Ungar (UK), Carlos Vázquez (Spain), Eiliv Bugge Fougner (Norway), Laurence van Lancker (Italy), Chris Wheatley (UK) and Manfred Hick (Germany). They delivered consistently good results throughout all four races (including two 2nd place finishes) and sailed their Jeanneau Sun Fast 37 to second position overall.

Dear Handballers,

The IE Handball club 2006 was especially formed to take part in the MBA tournament. Handball had been added as a new discipline, and Spain being World Champions, we felt that we couldn’t miss.

Our efforts were paid off – we came in 3rd in Paris!

Handball (or "team handball") is a fast-paced game involving two teams of seven players who pass, throw, catch and dribble a small ball with their hands while trying to score goals. The team with the most goals wins the game. A game consists of two 30-minute halves with a 10-minute half-time break.

We practiced as a team in several different sports centres and we had a ton of fun!
There is still a ball around that you will inherit for the coming year.

Go IE Go!

Description: the swimming club is aiming to allow people that share a passion for swimming to meet and have fun. Also the club is very active in coordinating the trainings and preparing the team for the attendance of the MBAT held in Paris.

There are a surprising number of pools in Madrid and this club practices at several. We get together to enjoy the exercise and to better our performance. We train for health and also for competitions abroad. In the 2006 MBA Tournament outside of Paris, at HEC, we placed 2nd overall and had many medals for individuals for our team of 12 students and partners. The more experienced individuals help the less experienced to improve in form and times. All are welcome to come and practice.

The rollerblading club practices at Retiro, where there are miles of flat roads to have fun on. There are rental locations around Madrid, but you can also purchase your own at sporting goods stores or at Corte Ingles.

All levels, beginners and advanced are welcome to join in!

The club also participates in competitions at the MBA Tournament in Paris.

IE´s study rooms are not just for thinking about case studies!

This club organises competitions for the more reflexive students and for those with strong powers of concentration..

Women’s Volleyball Club

The IE women’s volleyball club caters to all levels of player, with teams playing at the IESE Barcelona “Spring Fling,” and the MBAT hosted by HEC in France. We hold weekly practices where the emphasis of the club is stressed: enjoyment, both sporting and social. The friendly coaches help anyone learn the basics or improve their game, so whatever your current level of play, we encourage you to come out and have a ball!

El club del voleibol de mujeres es para todos niveles de jugadores. Nuestros equipos juegan en el IESE Barcelona “Spring Fling,” y el MBAT recibió por HEC en Francia. Tenemos las prácticas cada semana y el énfasis del club se enfatizan: el placer, para deportes y social. ¡Los entrenadores ayudan cualquiera aprende los principios o mejora su juego, así que cualquier su nivel actual del juego, nosotros le alentamos a venir y divertirse!

Women’s Football Club

The goal of the IE women’s soccer team is to provide an opportunity for women to play football at any level. We aim to maintain a balance between fun and player development. We play for fun and also train for international competitions- in 2005 we places 2nd at the Spring Fling and 2nd at the MBA Tournament. We encourage women to come along whether they are experienced players or have never kicked a ball: Football is fun and whatever your age and experience we welcome you.

El propósito del club femenino de fut-ball es proveer una oportunidad a las mujeres para involucrarse en el juego, no importando su nivel de experiencia. Tratamos de mantener un balance entre diversión y crecimiento profesional. Practicamos para divertirnos y tambien para competiciones international- en 2005 fuimos al Barcelona para el Spring Fling y tambien a Paris para el MBA Tournament y que do en segunda lugar en los dos.

Volleyball club
How familiar are these words?:
Team-work, team oriented, decision making skills, strategic planning, dynamic environment and flexibility…It seems like we were talking about businesses here, but no, we are talking about volleyball.

We all love this sport...that's why we meet once a week to play. We like to get together, have fun and release some stress from the daily workload.

We train, for fun and for competitions in Spain and abroad. We train sometimes together with the women´s team sometimes just men.
Come out and give it a try!

Although sailing is a sport that requires certain skills, the sailing club has members with different levels.

Founded in 2004, the Sailing Club is one of the most attractive ones.

The Club organizes sailing days near Madrid and, for second time this year 2005, has planed a week-long cruise to the Balearics in the month of July for its members and students or alumni, whether experienced sailors or beginners.

The club has also participated in several competitions organised by other Business Schools, such as the Spring Fling, hosted by IESE in Barcelona or the MBAs Cup Regatta and Conference in Portofino Bay, Italy, in September, organized by SDA Bocconi.

The MBAs Cup Regatta gathered 15 MBAs teams from top European and American (US and Canada) leading Business School competing on a team and an individual basis. The event was not only for people with a passion for sailing, but for anybody wishing to share personal experiences, enjoy social events and participate at conferences with exclusive top leaders from the industrial, financial, academic and sport world focused on the topic "Winning the global race: the innovation challenge".
In the Regatta, eight members of the IE club sailed their Jeanneau Sun Fast 37 to second position overall!

The tennis club organises top-level competitions as well as participates at the Spring Fling and the MBATournament in Paris.

There are, however, opportunities for all, and there are several leagues for different levels. All designed to bring people together while keeping fit.

The squash club has organised a league in which players of different levels take part. The aim was to enjoy free time practicing a sport and to get to know students from other groups and programmes.

This sport is for those who like to work as a team and have a competitive spirit. We train for competitions in Barcelona and Paris.

What´s more, what better way to get rid of even more of the week´s stress than having a couple of beers after the match!

Rowing in Madrid is not an easy thing to do. It can be organized at the Retiro Park. For longer rows, a trip outside Madrid to near El Escorial is required.

Instituto de Empresa, however, managed to become the HEC 2004 Rowing champions without having rowed together before the competition, and did quite well in 2005. There are mixed levels of experience on the team, and everyone is welcome to try it out!

This club comprises those students who want to experience new sensations by practicing freefall. They begin with tandem jumps, and the most daring move on to individual jumps. After the course, Participants can decide between two main specialisations: flat flying (traditional) and freefall.

Several skydiving sessions have been organised in Lillo with special rates for IE students and professors.

Padel tennis is a really popular sport in Spain. You need four players and a court ( just a bit smaller than the one used for tennis). It´s yet another excellent networking activity.

An exciting sport for everyone!!

With the organisation of a trip to Tarifa, in Cadiz, one of the best locations in the world for this sport, the members of this club have made it one of the most popular activities among IE students.

This group goes jogging around the Retiro or any one of Madrid´s many other parks at weekends and on some weekdays. They also train for the sports competitions at IESE and HEC.

It´s an excellent excuse to get away from that desk for a while.

Playing with this club is for all levels and physiques. Beginners receive classes and experts maintain or improve their handicap.

Members play weekends in Madrid with a final competition in Marbella and Ireland, as well as competing at the Spring Fling in Barcelona and the MBA Tournament at HEC outside of Paris.

The aim here is to visit Spain's main ski resorts - Sierra Nevada and the Pyrenees - to breathe pure mountain air and enjoy this most popular of winter sports.

This club organises weekends in the snow, where, apart from skiing itself, participants enjoy après-ski in the form of excellent Spanish cuisine.

Climbing in its different forms requires large doses of adrenaline.
Joining in the activities that this club organizes on the weekends guarantees continued teamwork and is the best therapy for aleviating stress after a long week´s at school.

Basketball Club

Regardless of the programs´ workload, this club organizes basketball meetings every week (especially before the sports competitions). Its main objectives are to generate friendships and to maintain or regenerate players´ form and skills.

The goal of the IE Salsa Club is for everybody that is interested to have fun and learn salsa dancing.

In the year 2005/2006 the IE Salsa Club offered salsa classes with private teachers at two levels (beginner and advanced). We had many dance outings at different places around Madrid including Cats. Several members also competed in the Salsa competitions at the Spring Fling (where IE placed first), and at the MBAT at HEC outside of Paris where 5 couples participated in the competition.

Everybody is welcome to join IE Salsa Club events: students, partners, singles, couples, beginners and dancers.
